Xander Dunlap, Associate Professor of Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki, Research Fellow at Boston University and an anarchist anthropologist, visits Tampere to present his latest book This System is Killing Us. Come to Pispala Library to for a one hour presentation in English, followed by an informal discussion!
The book summarises and synthesises Dunlap’s fieldwork experience from the last 10 years living with the resistance against industrial capitalism in areas of Peru, Mexico, France and Portugal where the catastrophic social and environmental impacts of industrial large scale energy infrastructure and mining have been brought to light.
The themes of the book are also relevant in Finland, as it deals with how energy or mining companies try to ignore and pacify opposition to their infrastructure projects by appeasing, gaslighting, silencing and bribing local residents or indigenous peoples for them to stop resisting.
For example St1 has promoted the Davvi wind power project in Sápmi despite Saami opposition, and Anglo American subsidiary AA Sakatti Mining Oy has been performing exploratory drilling in the Viiankiaapa mire despite the area’s double protected status.
